Announcement of the 2022 Dakar Rally outline

Issue #25:December 3, 2021

On Sunday, November 28, the rally organizer A.S.O. (Amaury Sport Organisation) announced the outline for the 2022 Dakar Rally.

The 2022 rally will be the third held in Saudi Arabia and starts in Jeddah overlooking the Red Sea where the prologue stage is held on 1 January 2022. Participants will head towards the rally’s start in the city of Ha’il located in the north where the competition will unfold in a clockwise direction with routes across Saudi Arabia. Starting in Ha’il on January 2, participants will arrive in Riyadh for the rest day on January 8 and will reach the goal in Jeddah on January 14.

The route traverses sand dunes of all sizes, in all stages of the rally. Carrying over from last year’s rally, a marathon stage is set up once again where mechanics are prohibited from supplying spare parts or providing vehicle maintenance. This is sure to be another tough competition worthy of the Dakar Rally name.
The stage for the first half is set in complex mountainous terrain in the north where navigation is challenging. We can expect to see the cars get worn down here as they take on large rocks and boulders.
In the second half of the rally, participants must push all the way across a vast area of sand dunes that continue towards the horizon as far as the eye can see.
The rally will be tough, putting participants through 4,300 km of competition stages and a total of 8,500 km.

In the 2022 rally, a total of 430 vehicles will be taking on the challenge: 170 motorbikes and quads; 97 cars; 105 lightweight vehicles (SSV); and 57 trucks (the number of TLC vehicles entering the production car category has not been announced).

In 2022, TLC will be confronting this harsh rally with two cars based on the Land Cruiser 200 Series for the last time. The team will be coming together as one to make this last run a 9th consecutive victory in the production car category. As always, TLC welcomes and appreciates your warm and ongoing support.
